Betel leaf is very popular in the Asian region, and it belongs to the family of Piperaceae, mostly consumed in the Asian region as a chewing substance.

It also contains vitamin A, nicotinic acid, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, and 36 trace minerals, including calcium, iron, iodine, phosphorus, and potassium. The phenols and terpene results in the strong, pungent aromatic flavor of the leaves. Betel leaves also contain chavicol, which is a colorless liquid and four times antiseptic than carbolic acid. The fresh leaves contain a high amount of essential oil diastase enzyme and sugar compared to old leaves.
